Duración : 6 Semanas

The marine renewable energy market is growing. Nowadays, international efforts focus on the promotion and growing of the sector in different countries, such as the United Stated, Chile, Mexico, or Europe. As this is a relatively young sector, specialists coming from different fields in engineering are playing a key role in the development of the field. For example, techniques typically used in offshore oil and gas extraction are adapted now, linking classical mythologies with new procedures to innovate in the novel world of marine energy.

This course given by Dr Encarni Medina-Lopez presents the main technical side of marine renewables, showing energy sources in the ocean and devices used to date. Moreover, each technology working procedure is presented. Finally, the sector perspectives are analysed, studying how the development if this market is linked to the available technological infrastructure.

Objetivos

The goal of this course is to give the student the main concepts in marine energy and its possibilities. During the course, the energy sources in the ocean will be analysed, from tidal energy to salinity gradient. The course will present different available devices nowadays, as well as their working principles. At the end of the course, the student will be able to identify different typologies of marine extraction, optimal locations and main considerations when planning renewable ocean energy projects.

A quién va dirigido

The course is designed for professionals with a background in Civil or Mechanical Engineering who wishes to get an introduction in the marine energy world. The course is also recommended for last year students in engineering disciplines.
