English, as a global lingua franca and the language of the internet, is a valuable skill to have in the professional world. As a professional geoscientist, knowledge of technical English specific to the geosciences is an asset that will open doors to career opportunities and increase the reach of your professional network.

The internet has created a permanently connected and active global network; individuals and teams from around the world are able to communicate and work together, regardless of their respective geolocations. Work in the geosciences is often collaborative and for international teams, English is often the language of communication.

This course is for professionals working in the geosciences and advanced bachelor (BSc) or postgraduate (MSc and PhD) students who have knowledge of the English language. It is for individuals who would like to develop their technical geoscience English language skills to prepare for or enhance their performance in the workplace.

The course is presented through videos and interactive, high-quality multimedia content made available via the virtual platform, combined with practical exercises. There will be live class webinars and individual tutorials delivered by videoconference.

Objetivos

The course provides the opportunity to: Review of the fundamental concepts of the English language at B2 level. Practice engaging with scientific and technical geoscience texts and audio transcripts to gain a good level of understanding in a range of contexts. Learn new, technical terminologies and vocabulary that will develop your repertoire when engaging professionally with an English-speaking audience. This covers the principal geoscience subject areas (see the contents tab for details). Create and deliver short technical presentations in English. Develop written English language skills to write a CV and cover letter, and verbal English language skills for job interviews and workplace communication.

A quién va dirigido

This course is for professionals working in the geosciences or related fields, as well as advanced BSc and postgraduate students who have prior knowledge of English. The course will benefit those who want to develop their technical geoscience language skills and build confidence in their ability to communicate effectively in international professional settings. It is recommended that participants have level B2 English or above to enroll in this course. Participants will need access to Microsoft Word and PowerPoint software to complete this course.

Module 1. Geology

Topics: the rock cycle, rock mechanics, plate tectonics, geohazards (earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis), structural geology.

Language focus: vocabulary, verb tenses (present simple, present perfect, present continuous, past simple, past perfect, past continuous, future) and adjectives.

Module 2. Mineralogy and Mining

Topics: mineralogy (igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic minerals), industrial minerals, mineral commodities, an introduction to mining, and minerals recycling.

Language focus: vocabulary, adverbs, comparatives, superlatives, quantifiers.

Module 3. Energy and Climate Change

Topics: energy sources, the carbon cycle, meteorology and climatology, climate change, global warming, the response to climate change.

Language focus: vocabulary, modal verbs, nouns and pronouns, articles, prepositions, relative clauses and pronoun antecedent agreement.

Module 4. Geotechnology and Geoengineering

Topics: applied geology, geotechnology, geotechnical engineering, geoengineering, soil science, rock mechanics II.

Language focus: vocabulary, phrasal verbs, conditional clauses, conjunctions (connectors), interrogative (question) words, and the Saxon genitive.

Module 5. The Water Cycle and Hydrogeology

Topics: the water cycle, hydrogeology, the groundwater system, water quality, wastewater treatment, waste disposal.

Language focus: vocabulary, grammatical voice construction – indirect (reported) speech, passive voice, active voice.

Module 6. Professional Profiles and Workplace Communication

Topics: looking for work (speculative applications), applying for an advertised position, writing a CV and cover letter, interview and workplace dialogue
